ABOUT ME

Whitney Young is a photographic artist based in Kansas City, MO, who received a formal education in photo media. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Kansas. Whitney was drawn to the medium of photography at an early age. Specifically, what captured her most was the idea of committing a physical memory into the world. Photography offered proof of existence, a permanent and tangible moment in time. Photography has allowed her to explore multiple environments, communities, and family dynamics while giving her access to complex understanding through still images. Though photography is her tool for these sociological and conceptual expressions, she also tends to play with abstraction in her work by incorporating experimental process techniques, playing with various printing methods, and layering.

This same passion for visual storytelling carries over into her professional work, where she has collaborated with brands and publications such as KU, KU Medical Center, Donutology, Victorian Trading Company, Jack Link's, US Air Guitar, The Pitch, and Catcall Magazine.

Whether capturing the essence of a campaign through a lens, refining details in post-production, or guiding the visual direction of a brand, Whitney brings a unique blend of creativity, precision, and thoughtful execution to every project she touches.

HIT ME UP!

It all starts with an idea. Maybe you’ve got a brand that needs a fresh look, a product ready to steal the spotlight, or a story waiting to be told through bold visuals. Whatever it is, great photography can turn a concept into something unforgettable—let’s make it happen.

“I would recommend Whitney to anyone who is looking for professional, top-quality photos. Whitney went above and beyond what I expected. She is a real class act.”

“Working with Whitney is a breeze. She’s prepared, easy to work with, and capable of problem-solving/thinking on her feet. When I submitted the first video she shot to broadcast TV, they responded “Who shot this and what are you paying them?”

“Working with Whitney is always the best! She consistently has smart, creative ideas that align perfectly with our overall social media strategies. She’s also a talented content writer, photographer, and designer so I can trust her to execute campaigns, posts, and projects without worry. She’s also fun, open-minded, and easy to work with. I’m always excited when I have the opportunity to do so.”

Help Fund My Next Project :)

Displaced Inheritance is my way of placing myself at the intersection of my grandparents’ momentous road trip through the lens of my own experience. It is a way to extract joy from a family history wrought with generational trauma and allow me to explore unknown histories that will eventually help me create a narrative that feels like home. As a way to connect the two timelines, I will recreate the road trip my grandparents took after their wedding. Using a medium-format camera I will create images that give a sense of place and show the land of the Lincoln Highway. The photos will utilize historical markers that could have been visited or seen by my family on their trip: Shops from historical downtowns, old motel signs in various states of decline, rest stops, large trees that may have served as a picnic or camping area, or the land itself, touched by the industry of the time, or not at all. These images will serve as a way to represent my mixed asian-american experience as I have only been given access to – through art history and the internet. The land I travel through is the only thing that connects me to my tenuous family history.

All funds donated to Displaced Inheritance will go directly towards the project by funding travel, film, printing, and research. Thank you for your support!
